No less than 64 Fatally Wounded in Rio de Janeiro's Biggest Security Action on Criminal Groups
A minimum of 64 civilians lost their lives in a law enforcement action targeting the organized crime group in the Brazilian city's northern districts - the most extensive and fatal action in the Brazilian state's records.
Four police officers were among those killed during the security mission in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, government representatives reported. More than 80 individuals were arrested.
Fierce clashes erupted when approximately 2,500 police forces moved in on Tuesday early hours. The criminal organization responded with armed resistance, igniting obstacles and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, police representatives said.
The United Nations human rights body said it was "appalled" by the police operation, calling for "prompt and effective investigations".
Mission Consequences
The area of favelas near Rio's airport is considered to be the central command of a major criminal organizations.
Government representatives said at least 50 of the fatalities were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".
Dozens of people were wounded, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

Locals have described the mountainous region - housing around 300,000 people - to a "battlefield" since the operation began.

Many of the individuals are thought to be members of a faction from the Pará state who are currently hiding in Rio de Janeiro.
